I've been away from the game for roughly 2 years now, I still do play from time to time whenever a friend asks, but never play solo anymore. FGC is where it's at for me.
Lately I've been wanting to scratch that moba itch, I tried out two mobas on my phone, Wild Rift and Mobile Legends (the game is pretty huge in South East Asia AFAIK) because I was told the games were short and fast
I'll start by saying why in the hell are heroes/champions locked behind a pay wall?! Dota 2 in particular has managed to stay afloat for almost a decade without having to grind any sort of in-game currency to purchase any of the heroes. If these heroes came in the form of season passes ($20-$30 for 5-6 characters ala fighting games) I understand it, but these heroes costs you roughly $10 each! Yeah sure it's free to play, but how many games a day/week/month would I need to play just to purchase a single one of them. You might say 'well..it's on phone' no, made some reading on LoL PC and I also realized that their heroes are behind a pay wall. It's predatory and stupid, I feel like it exists only to keep the player base up, imagine the amount of player base you will gain if all heroes are free and would only need to purchase cosmetics. Casuals would boom because they can play anyone, anytime.
On the gameplay front, these games feel like it's all about offense 100% of the time. In dota, I feel like it's well balanced that there will always be a niche hero or item pick that can counter whatever you are doing. There's a counterplay for every counterplay. I asked a friend who also plays wildrift what's the nearest counterpart of BKB, told me it's the sash, tried it out...it basically just dispels you. You can get perma-disabled to death in these games and there is basically nothing you can do about it.
There are practically no illusion/summon heroes as well which sucks because those heroes give a different style of play. All heroes feel the same as well, their skills are just repurposed skills from other heroes. Dota MIGHT be a culprit of this as well, but then again dota has a huge selection of items that makes the overall feel different.
I love how dota stayed true to the mechanics of Warcraft. Before 'moba' was a term, we used to call dota1 as an ARTS and it still shows. I'll probably never play dota solo queue again, but I will always say that dota will forever be the king of mobas, it will probably never touch League's number of players, but objectively speaking, dota is a better crafted game.
