Playing dota in lebanon with the mindset of going pro will hurt you very hard. The constant power outages and the unstable connection will give you a really hard time while trying to climb the mmr ladder.
You want to queue but you are not sure when the power goes out, because even though we have set times for when the power goes out, it's not reliable. Sometimes power goes on past the anticipated timeline and you are left regretting every minute you didn't play. Sometimes you play within the power hours yet unexpectedly the power goes off.
So, we have 2 power suppliers: Official public gov source, and private sources. And these two take turns to provide you with power, the first one gives it and takes it as it pleases and the second one just fills in. You make that this a bit hard, I sometimes find it hard myself, but we lebanese love our private power suppliers as much as we hate them. At least we know in the time the private power is on, its going to be constant, there won't be any shit, until shit itself happens and public power comes back. Then you are left nervously anticipating when will it go off because it can happen any second, even the second after it comes back. It's true.
Now when you know power is on and its well (private source), your connection betrays you. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does when you play dota. So sometimes you just power up your PC, and decide to test your connection by watching videos or just browse the internet for 30 minutes or an hour straight. See if it cuts off or if there are hiccups here and there. It seems well, and then you launch dota, with a big smile on your face expecting to play with no obstacles, you play for 10 minutes and smash your lane and you get erect, it's almost too perfect.. and will you look at that, your connection is off . Forced abandon. Again.
Next time you boot up your PC you go straight into playing dota, you don't want that hour you wasted last time browsing for testing purposes to be wasted again. 10 minutes in, connection is off, etc. Connection comes back after an hour and you just look at your 4th abandon of the week while trying to hold back all the frustration.
Sometimes you actually get to play a full match, can you believe that? Yes you get to play a full match, you heard that right. Sounds sweet, right? Not so fast... Your behavioral score is so low you are getting matched with the rejects of the dota community now. Your matches are so full of negativity. Oh well, you take what you get and play on because you still have that hope, that hope that keeps you going despite the hell you are going through. But then hope starts to fail, as you look at the calendar and notice that you've spent a year of your life taking shit, getting stressed, losing contact with lots of people, and the only thing that made you a bit happy was the same thing that made you miserable.
Serious note: You really get a lot of abandons due to these issues and sometimes when power goes off and on there is a window that you could reconnect but you have to boot up again, launch steam and dota then reconnect (reconnect itself takes at least 2 to 3 minutes to fully load the match back) so it takes a minimum of 5 minutes or a maximum of 9 minutes (from the moment you disconnect) to fully reconnect to a game, but people with low behavior score wont be pausing for you. So it would be nice of Valve to extend the disconnect/abandon timer or at least optimize the loading time for a match you are trying to reconnect to or pause the abandon timer when you are attempting to reconnect to the match. What I hope now is that our power and connection becomes better. Esports is a really good field to start in at the moment and it's a real shame people here won't be able to pursue it through ordinary means.
